How We Build an Inground Pool

From start to finish, Buster Crabbe Pools can build a pool in about two weeks. Please be aware that some factors can affect that timeline, including weather, the size of the pool, or add-on accessories.

  • Step 1: Establish pool area and begin digging

A yellow excavator is digging a hole in the dirt in a backyard.

After an initial consultation, we will determine where you would like the pool. Many factors affect where a pool can be installed, such as septic, utility lines, and the slope of your yard.

Once a location has been decided and a design is in place, we can begin digging with precise methods to ensure a proper fit. This process typically takes one to two days.

  • Step 2: Install and anchor pool wall

A swimming pool is being built in a backyard

Once the pool has been dug, we install the steel wall frame. The steel structure is bolted together and anchored to the ground by rebar and concrete around the bottom of the wall.

At this point, you will begin to recognize the pool you have been imagining.

  • Step 3: Install plumbing and backfill

A swimming pool is being built in the dirt next to a house.

Next, we install the pool plumbing to the return jets, skimmer(s), main drain(s), and automatic cleaner line. All plumbing functions will be centralized at an equipment pad where the filtration system keeps the water moving and the pool clean. Finally, we install drain tile around the bottom to allow ground water to drain away from the pool. This prevents water from seeping up behind the liner.

Once the plumbing is set, we backfill around the pool with gravel to prevent settling and assist in drainage around the pool. This process can be completed in about one day.

  • Step 4: Pour concrete deck

A swimming pool is being built with a concrete deck and stairs.

You will have a choice of broomed concrete or stamped natural slate concrete. Broomed concrete is like a driveway or sidewalk and costs less. Stamped concrete will look more like natural stone and can come in a variety of colors.

The amount and style of concrete deck you choose will determine how much time it will take to complete this process; however, this process usually takes two to three days.

  • Step 5: Level dirt and install equipment

A swimming pool filter is sitting on top of a concrete platform

We aren’t landscapers, but we do want to leave your yard in good condition. We always level out the dirt around the pool to provide a smooth transition from the concrete to the surrounding areas. Often, customers have professional landscapers come in as we finish the pool.

At this point we will install the pump, sand filter, chemical feeder, and any additional user-friendly maintenance equipment, such as a heater, salt generator, or automation system.

This step takes one to two days.

  • Step 6: Pour bottom and install liner

For the final steps, we will first pour a mixture of Portland cement and vermiculite to form the bottom of the pool. This mixture is best for holding a solid shape but softer than concrete and increases the life of the liner.

Now the liner is ready to be installed. While the pool fills, the liner is held in place by special vacuums. When the pool is full, we will install all the pool accessories, such as handrail(s), ladder, diving board, basketball goal, slide, etc.  This generally takes two to three days to complete.

In just two short weeks, your backyard pool is ready to enjoy. We also will teach you everything you need to know about your pool and how to maintain it.
